Our Story
The Beginning
SYLVANA began with a walk in the woods and a question most people never think to ask: why do I feel so different in a forest? Not just calmer — actually better. Clearer. More myself.
The answer, it turns out, is chemistry. Ancient trees have been releasing therapeutic compounds into the air for millions of years — phytoncides, part of a tree's own defense system, and it happens to be a system our bodies recognize and respond to. The Japanese discovered this science decades ago and built an entire healing practice around it called Shinrin-yoku — forest bathing. We built a brand around it.
The Akasawa Inspiration
Every SYLVANA formulation is inspired by Akasawa Natural Recreation Forest, deep in the mountains of Nagano, Japan. Home to hinoki cypress trees exceeding 300 years old, Akasawa was designated Japan's first official Forest Therapy Base — a site where the government-backed science of forest bathing was first formally measured and studied.
We didn't just borrow the imagery. We studied the published air-composition data from Akasawa and similar hinoki forests, identified the specific terpene profile responsible for its documented effects, and used that as the literal formulation target for our Forest Calm line — and the scientific foundation for every line that followed.
The Discovery Moment
Walk down any "clean home fragrance" aisle and the pitch is the same: zero VOC, non-toxic, no parabens. All true, all worth caring about — and all about what's absent. Nobody was talking about what forest air actually adds: measurable, documented, peer-reviewed biological benefit.
That gap became SYLVANA's reason to exist. We set out to formulate around beneficial phytoncides at concentrations meaningful enough to matter — not trace amounts included for scent, but therapeutic levels backed by the same terpene research being published in immunology and neuroscience journals.
The Transparency Commitment
Wellness marketing is full of vague claims. We decided early that SYLVANA would hold itself to a different standard: every terpene in every product ties back to a specific documented effect, sourced from published clinical research — visible on our Science page, cited by name, not hidden behind "proprietary blend" language.
We commission independent lab analysis and Certificates of Analysis (COAs) for our formulations, and we make our sourcing and testing process available on request. If we can't point to the research, it doesn't go in the bottle.
The Delivery Decision
Early on we tested every delivery method available — heated wax, ultrasonic water diffusion, reed and carrier-oil blends, open flame. Every one of them either diluted the terpene concentration, introduced compounds we couldn't fully account for, or applied enough heat to shift the chemical profile of the very compounds we were trying to deliver.
We landed on cold-air nebulizing diffusion: pressurized air shearing pure oil into a dry micro-mist, with no water, no heat, and no carrier. It was the only method that let the full terpene profile reach the air unchanged. Pure oil. Nothing synthetic. Nothing hidden. Nothing lost on the way in.
The Dragon's Blood Discovery
While researching botanical antioxidants for a body oil line, we found a compound most wellness brands had overlooked entirely: dragon's blood, the sap of the Amazonian Croton lechleri tree. Lab-tested ORAC scores put it at 2,897,110 — not close to the next-highest substance we could find, but in a category of its own.
It became the obvious hero ingredient for our body oil line, and the clearest example of what SYLVANA is actually about: finding what nature has already engineered, verifying it rigorously, and bringing it home — unaltered, undiluted, and fully documented.
